In the mid-1800s, French-Canadian fur trappers of the old Hudson's Bay Company joined pioneer settlers and Native Americans in the central Cascade Mountain Range area. The fur trappers gave the name Riviere des Chutes (River of the Falls) to one of Oregon's most scenic rivers, the Deschutes River, from which the county of Deschutes took its name. In 1916 Deschutes County was created from a part of Crook County.

In the heart of the state, Deschutes County is the outdoor recreation capital of Oregon. With noble, snow-capped peaks dominating the skyline to the west and the wide-open high desert extending to the east, the beauty and uniqueness of Deschutes County captures the awe of locals and visitors alike. From humble beginnings a logging and timber mill center, Deschutes County, like the region it serves, has grown into a bustling, exciting place where progress and growth are ongoing hallmarks.
The county seat is Bend, Oregon, founded in 1900 as part of Crook County with a population of 21. Located 20 miles east of the Cascades Mountains in the center of Oregon, the town became part of Deschutes County December 13, 1916, with a population of 6,193. At one time in its history, the Bend Lumber Mill was the largest timber processing plant in the world.
