Deschutes County History: in the mid-1800s, French-Canadian fur trappers of the old Hudson's Bay Company joined pioneer settlers and Native Americans in the central Cascade Mountain Range area. The fur trappers gave the name Riviere des Chutes (River of the Rapids) to one of Oregon's most scenic rivers, the Deschutes River, from which the county of Deschutes took its name. In 1916 Deschutes County was created from a part of Crook County.
