Prineville was the first town in Central Oregon. Settled in 1868 and once the center of a much larger Crook County, it remains the only incorporated city in the county. Located in Central Oregon’s Crook County, Prineville is 147 miles east of Portland and 35 miles north of Bend. Situated in a verdant valley almost surrounded by rimrocks, Prineville, as well as the region's other geographic features, make the area a favorite place for rockhounds. Regional activities include cross-country skiing, hiking, and snowmobiling, and boating and fishing are found at nearby Ochoco Lake. The nearby Ochoco National Forest is an oasis of trees and lush vegetation in the middle of the Central Oregon high desert.
