Located between Umatilla and Boardman on Highway 730, Irrigon was incorporated in 1957. It's original purpose was to act as a ferry crossing on the Umatilla River before the Umatilla Bridge was built. The town got its name from the large amount of irrigation created to tracts of tillable land
for various agricultural pursuits.
