The
event is well-documented.
On
orders from President Thomas Jefferson, the Corps of Discovery -
better known as the Lewis & Clark Expedition - set off from
St. Louis more than 200 years ago in search of a water route linking
the heartland of an expanding United States to Pacific trade routes.
That
expedition ended when the team made its way down the Columbia River
and eventually reached the Pacific Ocean.
Now,
two centuries later, America is recognizing the bicentennial of
this event. History buffs are retracing the steps of Meriwether
Lewis, William Clark, Native American guide Sacagawea and the rest
of the military team.
