Echo, Oregon American
Indian artifacts excavated in the Echo area show that it has been an attractive
place to live for over 3,000 years. The clean air, scenery, quiet, historic atmosphere,
community pride and low crime rate continue to make Echo an attractive place to
live, operate a business, and raise a family. Old scenic buildings and homes abound
in Echo. Over half the buildings on the west side of town were built prior to
1915. Echo was named for Echo Koontz, daughter of J.H. Koontz. Geography:
Echo is located in the Umatilla River Valley among rolling hills 15 miles south
of the Columbia River and 30 miles from the Blue Mountains. Population:

The Echo area enjoys a mild semi-desert climate, with average rainfall less than
10 inches per year. Key
Attractions: Echo Meadows Oregon Trail Site: Nearly one mile of visible
ruts of the Oregon National Historic Trail are located on 320 acres of public
lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. A half-mile hiking path with overlook
provides viewing of the wagon ruts and abundant local wildlife. In this designated
Area of Critical Environmental Concern, the Oregon Trail and cultural resources
are protected by law. Access is 5.5 miles west of Echo, where you turn
north from Highway 320 onto a gravel road. Proceed 1.2 mile to entrance and parking
area. No sanitary facilities or water. Closed to all off-road vehicles beyond
parking lot. |
