| Tillamook,
Oregon Tillamook is positioned right on the North Oregon Coast,
75 miles west of Portland. Tillamook is the county seat, located right in the
middle of Tillamook County. It is surrounded to the North by Bay City,
is nestled next to Tillamook Bay. The Coast Range and the Tillamook State Forest
lie to the East. West and South of Tillamook you will find the 3 Capes Scenic
Loop, with Cape Meares, Oceanside and Netarts all offering spectacular views of
the ocean! The City of Tillamook was the first community to be settled
in the county. It was first named "Hoquarten," believed to be an Indian
name meaning "the landing." The name was later changed to Tillamook, meaning
"land of many waters". Joseph Champion was the first settler in the
vicinity. He arrived in 1851 and made his home in a hollow spruce tree. Before
long, more settlers came, all bachelors. In 1852, the first two families arrived
to make their homes. Each year brought more families. On December 15, 1853, Tillamook
County was created by an act of legislature. With the coming of the railroad
in 1911, the first paved streets were laid. By 1925 Tillamook was quickly becoming
the modern commercial, agricultural and industrial center it is today.
