Woodburn, Oregon
Founded in 1889, Woodburn takes pride in being known as the "City
of Unity," a place where citzens can
celebrate differences and share cultural heritage. Diversity and acceptance are
evident in the schools, where students can enroll in Russian language classes
as early as kindergarten. In downtown Woodburn, Mexican import shops, bakeries
and restaurants flourish. The community also provides many special opportunities
for senior citizens to share their time and talent in an active retirement lifestyle.
In 1954, the new Interstate 5 freeway was completed on the west side of the
city. The freeway, along with other significant events in the 60's, sparked a
burst of development. Near the new freeway, a new private retirement
community named Woodburn Senior Estates was built and attracted an influx of senior
couples and single people. About 1000 Russian Old Believers settled here, bringing
their culture, dress and religion. A large Hispanic community grew in
Woodburn originally around local agricultural labor needs, but soon Hispanic businesses
also appeared. With more than a century of growth, Woodburn has developed a broad
economic base and a cosmopolitan blend of cultures not normally found in cities
of its size. Population:
